Jacob's Shadow: Christian Perspectives on Masculinity

Jacob's Shadow: Christian Perspectives on Masculinity
There is no other book like Jacob's Shadow which addresses the unique issues of a masculine practice of faith. Among so much "trendy" books on the subject of spirituality, Anderson shares himself as man, son, husband, father, and pastor in a way that is disarming, authentic and penetrating. Built around the Biblical narrative of Jacob, son of Isaac and brother of Esau, the book sensitively help us all lower our defenses and enter more fully what it means to be a male created in the image of God. This book is without peer!

A wonderful companion on your journey
I met Herbert Anderson at a men's retreat sponsored by my church and he spoke on just one chapter of this book. I purchased a copy that weekend and read it cover to cover in a day. I found myself moved by his story and the connections his words, and the story of Jacob, made in my life. I heartily recommend this book to every man who is a father, grandfather, husband, friend, colleague. It is an insightful and compassionate book that will help you along your spiritual journey. Well done Herb!

The fullness of being man
Anderson does an incredible job of reflecting on the many facets of being a man and a man who loves and serves Christ. He challenges men to delve deeper into their lives exploring relationships, emotions, loves and friendships and their impact on self and others. He challenges common notions of "Christian Man" and their behaviors, feelings and reactions. He examines everyday events that happen to men and opens up a new dimension on how men can learn and interpret from those experiences. It has truly challenged me to examine myself, my relationships and the fullness of being a man, and a man who serves Christ.

Letters Across the Divide: Two Friends Explore Racism, Friendship, and Faith
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (January, 2001)
Authors: David Anderson and Brent Zuercher
Average review score:

I need to read this book!
I happened to be up early this morning and turned on C-Span's "booknotes" to hear David Anderson. When he was finished speaking, I knew I had to buy this book. Even though I have not yet read it, the message that Mr. Anderson shared about commitment, respect, sincerity and acceptance and his evident faith and alignment with his Christian beliefs were so incredibly powerful, that I knew I needed to place an order immediately.
I can't honestly offer a "star" rating as yet, but since I had to make a choice, I feel my rating is justified based on what I've seen so far.

Example of How And Why We Need To Heal
Anderson and Zuercher should be applauded for their courage to tackle the ongoing subject of Racism in America. I found the book very informative and encouraging, especially when Mr. Zuercher admitted to thoughts he did not realized he harbored against Blacks. I found the book informative as Mr. Anderson set an example for all us, on how to deal with persons who hate just because of something they see on the outside (skin color, religion style, etc.) This book is for anyone wanting to grow in their relationships with others.

Bridgeway Partner
I attend Bridgeway Community Church on a regular basis. I have attended this church for about 5 years now. I know David Anderson personally, and I am very proud of him and his many achievements since I have known him.

Maniilaq: Prophet from the Edge of Nowhere
Published in Paperback by Onjinjinkta Distribution (October, 2001)
Authors: Steven B. Terry and Jill K. Anderson
Average review score:

God Speaks to Everyone
The book is a short description of legends of Maniilaq -- an
Eskimo prophet of the 19th century. I found it beautiful. God speaks to all people and his message is the same everywhere. Highly recommended.

Hope
This is a wonderful book for anyone and any age. It can inspire us and give us all comfort knowing that the "grandfather" in the sky cares for all of us. It is an easy read told through the words of the elders. It is a very wonderful book and is a reminder of how we are all God's children. I highly recommend it!!!

Perfectly written.
Wonderful! If you are looking for an uplifting book without it being preachy, this is the one you want.
Historically accurate, imaginative, and well researched.
The cover art is beautiful.
The content is wonderful; it would be a great book for a multi-cultural class.

randy m. in anderson-ohio [no we didn't name the town after him!]

A must read!
I have never been in the military but this book gave me a birds eyes view of what it must be like. There is plenty of humor to keep the reader interested as you follow Daljan from bootcamp through his naval career. This would be a great book for military people wanting a book that tells it like it is.

The Other Side of a Sailor
Hilarious, refreshing and fun to read. As Jand stated "each chapter is a story within a story". I read a chapter each day when I got home from work. I couldn't wait to get home each day to read the next chapter. Finally someone wrote the story of what naval life is really like 99.9 percent of the time. With a career spanning 20 years we have only begun to enjoy the stories of "DALJAN". Mr. Anderson : Don't you dare stop now! We "your fans" are ANXIOUSLY awaiting the further adventures of "DALJAN!

Reagan In His Own Voice
Published in Audio Cassette by Simon & Schuster (Audio) (01 November, 2001)
Authors: Kiron Skinner, Annelise Anderson, and Martin Anderson
Average review score:

Awesome!
What more can you ask for. The core of Reagan's philosophy, in his own spoken word. Listening to this made it clear the Reagan revolution was no accident.

Timeless commentary
I found myself consumed with this collection. I listened to the entire 5-CD set in one sitting. Though these commentaries took place in the 1970s, the wisdom contained within is timeless. You will find Reagan's words prophetic and very applicable to the 21st century. As you listen to these, keep in mind that Reagan personally wrote each of these commentaries. Outstanding collection!

Reagan speaks
When I first heard this set of audiotapes, I was drawn in by the way it was put together. The editors of Reagan In His Own Voice precede each broadcast or group of broadcasts with commentary of their own or summary of the then-current events. Reagan's no-nonsense opinions on every topic ranging from junk food to gun control reminds me of the ideals I grew up with during my teenage years. The morals and values of that time helped shape me into the person that I am today: compassionate with the belief that every one person is responsible for his/her own actions. Sadly, there's a segment of the population who might consider Reagan's messages outdated or superficial.
Whether you are Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, there is something here for everyone to identify with. Go to your local library and listen to this set. I guarantee at least half of you will wind up buying it. Enjoy and Take Care.

The Reign of the Stavka

Hard to put down! Have the Russians been using us?
My wife gave me this book as a gift. It did not have the Clancy or Ludlow author on the cover, so I was a bit slow to start on it. I was sure wrong with my prejudgement!

I took it on a business trip and could not put it down. I was familiar with many of the places mentioned, I love geo-political suspence books, and it was clean.

Around 1988, I was going out to Southern Utah quite often for work to test a new ejection seat for aircraft. We spent quite a bit of time at an old World War II era secret test facility called Hurricane Mesa, now privately owned. During many hours of "dead time" I enjoyed walking around the plateau looking at various relics, both the successes and failures of yesterdays high technology. This place would have been very impressive back then and still is today. The road leading to the mesa is not marked and there is no reason to think anything would even exist up there. As the author did, I too can easily visualize a secret Soviet military group utilizing this mesa and one of the surrounding canyons.

With the newly elected majority of communists in Russia now, you have to wonder if many the authors fictional events have some truth to them.

I'm anxious for the next title by Tim Andersen!

I could not put it down.
I found that it held my attention. It painted a word picture that was very suspenseful. Not only did I enjoy this novel, but my 16 year old son who is an avid Tom Clancey reader said, " It was more Tom Clancey than Tom Clancy."

Intrigue and suspense with every page.
I enjoyed this book immensely! With every page I was brought to places that were familiar to me. Tim Anderson eloquently writes about a time in history that many people in the world never expected to see in their lifetime. If you enjoy a book that contains a breathtaking thrill ride filled with honor, deceit, romance, and suspense, this book will keep you captivated. Intriguing!!! I could not put it down until I finished every page.

Roofing With a Naked Lady and Other Stories
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (July, 2001)
Author: Fred Anderson
Average review score:

Delightful
I laughed so hard I was crying. It really made my day. I hope Fred will continue to write as I know there are many more stories to be told. He has a real knack for seeing the humor in what we experienced on a daily basis. He also sees why we became teachers, it was the kids...

I am spreading the word to my teacher friends that this is a must read.

Been there, done that!!
My wife and I are both teachers and this book is a slice taken from our lives. I guess the same kids go to all the schools all over the world, because if we didn't meet these students and teachers ourselves, we heard about them in the teachers lounge or over dinner. Anderson finds the levity in these situations that we may have missed while under fire. Open this book on any page for humorous insights into the life of a high school teacher.

A flashback to my youth
I laghed. I cried. I peed my pants. Seriously, A great book of short stories that take me back to the ways of high school.

The Royal Tenenbaums
Published in Hardcover by Touchstone Home Video (January, 2002)
Author: Wes Anderson
Average review score:

This is not a novel...
It is the screenplay of the movie, the same one that should have won the Oscar this year. For people who haven't seen the movie, reading the screenplay first may not be such a great idea. I know this movie went over a lot of people's heads, and I'm not positive one can fully appreciate the story from just reading it. However, I definately recommend reading it after seeing the movie, there is so much great dialogue that is easily missed and a lot of subtle humor that is more obvious written on the page. This was one of the best movies of 2001 and the screenplay is a great way to appreciate it again while waiting for the dvd.

A Superb and Unique Screenplay
"The Royal Tenenbaums" is really a great and clever film. Although it's not really classified as a solid comedy, it had me laughing aloud from start to finish. Then again, I like that weird kind of humor. To me, it was just a great film that took chances. It wasn't out to win a popularity contest. Wes Anderson makes films the way he envisions them and the way he wants them to be.

The thing that stands out the most in "The Royal Tenenbaums" is the brilliant script that was written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. The dialogue witty and realistic, and each character stands out and leaves an impression on us.

The story is about Royal Tenenbaum and his dysfunctional family. Him and his wife separated many years ago, but the divorce was never final. His wife, Etheline, kept the house and raised the children by herself. They each reached to fame in some way or another, but not without problems lurking about. After many years have passed, Royal finds out that Etheline has been asked to take somebody's hand in marriage. Royal comes up with a scheme on how to get himself back into the picture, bringing forth a crazy and unexpected family reunion like you have never seen.

With only set directions and dialogue, this reads more like a play. There are no camera angels, which is why it reads like a script for a play. You'll appreciate it more if you've seen the movie, but reading it is just as enriching and enjoyable to me. You get to relive your favorite moments and exchanges through words.

"The Royal Tenenbaums" by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson is a magnificent screenplay and can be enjoyed many times over. With great dialogue exchanges, characters, and out-of-control and unpredictable situations, this is a screenplay worth reading over and over again. A work of art, if you ask me.

Favorite line from the movie: "Anybody feel like grabbing a couple of burgers and hitting the cemetery?" - Royal Tenenbaum

SIMPLY BREATHTAKING
I thought that the Royal Tenebaums was one of the best films I have seen this year, after what I thought had been a disasterous year of film making,it was a breath of fresh air, the only other two films I feel are on a level with it are Amelie and The Man who wasn't there!
From the very opening I wanted to go and see the film, with it's bright colours and quirky story line, the very advertisment had me drooling with delight.
I had mixed reviews from some of my friends, some thought it was boring, others hilarious, after going to see it with my brother and sister it was a unanimous decision, this film was AMAZING!
The plot itself was so simple, yet the characters made the film what it was, I absolutely loved Richie and I thought that Pagoda was brilliant, going to see this film has to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life.

I'M Not Coming Back; Talks With Ananda Abinou
Published in Paperback by Epinoc Publishing (10 August, 2001)
Author: K. M. Anderson
Average review score:

This is a man worthy to be heard!
As a student of Ananda Abinou, I know his teachings to be the TRUTH, plain and simple. He can give it to you nifty or grity, intellectually or the [simplified] version, but the ultimate realization is yours and yours alone!

"I'm Not Coming Back" - this student got it!
"I'm Not Coming Back" by Ananda Abinou, is one of the most, if not THE most, incredible and informative book 'studies' of the human...being...I have ever experienced. I say 'studies' because I have studied repetitively, its contents. I have drawn great strength from what I have read, and find myself re-accessing various chapters in confirmation of what I have experienced, and as well, what I question within this universe, within myself. I encourage all who seek TRUTH, to experience Ananda Abinou's teachings. In "I'm Not Coming Back", Ananda's words, his voice, speak in the REAL and in the RAW, not prettied up so that the ego is comfortable. Get ready for a real ass-whipping at times. Make room for truth to come through. Often we want something that soothes, strokes and caresses our tender ego. We want to be told that how we act, or act out, is alright because that's how we were raised, or that's how we were taught, or whatever excuse we choose to create for that moment. So careful, if you dare to read this book of truth. Ready yourself. Sometimes, the words ARE hard to read. Not because one doesn't understand, but because one understands all too well and we don't want those words to be about us. It's easier if it's about someone else. Right? Well, hah! Buckle up! Open your mind, let the ego take a rest, jump into your senses and feel. Feel what this phenomenal teacher is sharing with us. ALLOW YOURSELF TO FEEL! Ananda tells it like it is. All can benefit, from the street wise 'yo wassup' homeboys and homegirls, to the highly educated sophisticates, as well as everyone and everything in between, who share this platform of learning... called EARTH.

Thank you Ananda, for your guidance, your realness, your truth and assistance in giving me the tools to find, not just my own truth...but TRUTH ITSELF. Namaste, Christa Victoria

Insightful, Empowering, and Thought Provoking Reading
I found this book to be an engaging and somewhat enigmatic explanation of the meaning of life and love according to Ananda Abinou. It addresses so many of the "how's" and "why's" of our existence. I loved the question and answer format. The book allowed me to feel as if I were in the mist of the actual teaching and learning forum. It is so intellectually stimulating. You will want to read it many times. I have and learned from each reading.

The Movement and the Sixties
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (May, 1996)
Author: Terry H. Anderson
Average review score:

Great Information. I did a project...
In the 8th grade I did a project about the protests against the Vietnam war i nteh 1960's. THis book was my main reference. it has pictures, quotes, lines from songs, and all-over great information. I would reccomend this book to just about anyone who just felt like learning something new about the "flower child" era. (It was the best of times, it was the worst of times) this is a great book, and it was fun to read, in spite of it being for a grade. I really encourage you to read this book.

A great narrative history of the Sixties.
Anderson's book is a great narrative account of that most legendary of decades, the Sixties. He does a good job of identifying the various strands that made up Sixties culture, strands which are often lumped together by people today who have but a hazy notion of what really went on. The book is full of great anecdotes and supported by loads of primary sources. Read this book and check to see if this is how you remember it!

Excellent text for 60's in America
As a student and then student teacher of a course using this book i have found it not only personally interesting but a stimulating book for conversation with my students! It is in no way dry but gives insightful analysis of a time too often shown to today's youth in cliches and stereotypes.
